ABERDEEN, Miss. (WTVA) - Three Aberdeen aldermen received a letter demanding that they pay $9,056.09 to the Office of the State Auditor.
The letters from the State Auditor accused Lady Garth, Edward Haynes, Jr. and Nicholas Holliday of misappropriation of city funds.
The payment stems from retroactive salary payments, made to then-Mayor Maurice Howard in August and September of 2020.
All three of the city leaders voted for back-pay to Howard.
The money also includes interest and the cost of recovery.
They are required to reimburse the state auditor within 30 days, according to the letter.
If the three do not pay, the state will sue them and charge interest.
