COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) — Drivers in Columbus will need to get used to a detour starting next week, but it's for work aimed at making Main Street much safer for drivers and pedestrians.
The closure will allow workers to put in a mini roundabout at Main Street and 2nd Street.
Detour planned for Main St. in Columbus starting early next week.
City engineer Kevin Stafford said it is part of a nearly $5 million plan to put mini roundabouts along the thoroughfare downtown as well as make it easier for people to cross the street and drivers to get out of parking spots without backing into traffic.
Stafford expected Main Street to close between 2nd Avenue North/Island Road and 3rd Street either Monday or Tuesday of next week and stay that way until November.
Traffic will be sent onto 2nd Avenue North to get around the construction.
