STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - Starkville police are advising residents and drivers to lock their cars' doors.
More than 50 auto burglaries have been reported in a month’s time.
“Over the past 10 days, we had 36 reported auto burglaries,” said Cpl. Brandon Lovelady.
He said most of these auto burglaries involved unsecured vehicles.
Burglars often go car-to-car, tugging on the door handles.
“If the burglar is unsuccessful, they’ll move on to the next car, or once the car alarm sounds, the burglar will run away."
What is causing the recent surge in auto burglaries?
Lovelady looks at Starkville’s increasing population, including the return of thousands of university students.
“If you see something, please report it to your local law enforcement,” he said.
