STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - Firefighters in Oktibbeha County answered a call to a house fire on Monday that saved one life and will forever change another.

At around 5 PM on Monday afternoon, two Starkville firefighters received a call about a house fire.

“When he opened the door, black smoke just came rolling out,” said firefighter Sarah Thompson.

She was one of the first to the fire.

Thompson searched the house and found a fire that destroyed the kitchen, but little did she know something was upstairs.

Six-year-old Yellow Labrador Retriever Quinn was sitting on a bed on the second floor surrounded by smoke.

Thompson said her partner, Sergeant Levi Thompson, could not see the dog on the bed.

When brushing his hand over the top of the bed, he found the scared dog.

Quinn was out of the burning house within 15 minutes of the fire department receiving the initial call.

It was right around this time that Quinn's owner, Dylan Cochran, saw her dog.

“At first, I was like, there’s no way this can be happening. They have the wrong house. It’s not, my dog’s fine," explained Cochran. "Then whenever I saw him I like burst into tears.”

Cochran said her Yellow Lab came out of her house black.

However, besides needing a bath, Quinn was okay.

“Quinn is my whole world, like I love this dog," she said. "I’m so unbelievably happy and thankful and I cried for hours just because he was okay.”

Thompson said a closed bedroom door is what saved Quinn's life, however, it was also because of the hard work and selflessness from her and her fellow firefighters.

“A dog is, you know, it’s someone’s pet too. It’s someone’s family, so it really just reminds you why you do the job," said Thompson. "You’re saving someone’s life. You’re saving someone’s family.”

Quinn's vet put him on steroids.

Cochran said he's doing great and is back to his cuddly, attention-seeking self.

She wanted to make sure to thank the firefighters and her vet for helping keep Quinn safe.

He is currently at Cochran's parents' house to be under her mom's constant care.

Cochran and her roommate are in an Airbnb owned by her landlord. The landlord hopes to have them back in the house in a week.
