TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- Some people reported long wait times on the coronavirus vaccine hotline.
In a Facebook video from last week (week of 01-06-21), MEMA addressed such reports.
“We have rectified that to some degree, and that will get better going into next week as we add individuals to the call center.”
“She said you’re gonna have to go online, and I said ‘I’m 83, I don’t go online’,” Howard Davenport of Tupelo said. He explained his trouble with getting registered over the phone.
Davenport said that for the past couple of weeks, he’s tried to get registered on the hotline, but had no luck. He said he finally gave up on the first call.
“After 20 minutes, I put my phone on speaker, and started doing some chores, and an hour and 46 minutes, and 10 seconds later, I turned it off, thoroughly disgusted.”
He explained that on Tuesday, he called medical centers and pharmacies around Tupelo. Then he decided to try the hotline one more time.
“After 28 minutes, this young man answered, he was very nice, he was very courteous, he was efficient.”
He said he’s frustrated he had to worry for two weeks, but he’s glad it’s taken care of.
“I finally got an appointment.”
MEMA announced last week that they would add more people to answer the phones for the current week (the current week is the week of 1-12). A WTVA reporter called the number on Tuesday (1-12-21), and someone helped him after just 12 minutes.
Later that evening, however, he kept getting a busy dial tone.
As the vaccinating process evolves with numerous adjustments required, the health department is making changes to help the situation.
One such adjustment is coming after Governor Reeves made a big announcement in a press conference on Tuesday.
“We will be offering the vaccine to anyone who is over the age of 65 and anyone who has a pre-existing that makes them more vulnerable to the virus,” Reeves said.
Some are expressing concern that this will make wait times longer, but a spokesperson for the Department of Health announced via Facebook that it is adding an additional hotline to help with the high number of calls.
