TUPELO, Miss.  (WTVA) - The construction program at Tupelo High School is teaching students how to build a life for themselves.

The two-year program is helping students learn how to build a range of items from tables to tiny houses.

Cedric Thompson is a student in the program and is excited to further his skills and learn about what he loves.

“This is the only thing I'm really sure about is, that I want to do construction," he said. "So, I’m trying to learn everything I can before I open my own business."

Scott Bridges, the instructor of the program, said not only is he equipping students with invaluable skills, but he is also allowing them to explore options upon graduation.

“These students will be able to walk on to any construction site and know what the tools are and how to use them," Bridges said. "They’ll be valuable to a business rather than a burden. I also teach them that there are other avenues besides college, of course, we promote college, but it’s not for everyone."

During this semester, the class will build a tiny house that will go up for auction once completed. To help build this tiny house, the class is holding a Valentine’s Day fundraiser.

Students are selling heart-shaped picture frames they made themselves. The hearts are $10 apiece, and you can get one for the one you love by contacting asbridges@tupeloschools.com.
