TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - A gripping story in Corinth, the killing of a black teenager back in 1959 on Halloween night. The victim's sister is seeking justice after all these years.
William Roy Prather died a day after being shot in the face.
"I asked the doctor why is his head so big," said Eberlene King. "He said swelling because he has pellets all his brains and everywhere."
Then just 14-years-old King William's sister says she and her brother were like twins. She outgoing and him quiet.
Prather was coming from church with a friend.
"We went to trial, it was really just for everybody's benefit. It was really, just a show to pretend like they were doing justice," King shared.
Eight white boys were charged. Only one, Darnell Glidewell served time, and that was for a year.
The federal government has been reviewing civil rights killings, including this one.
The FBI interviewed the doctor who treated prather and recalled prather s eyeballs hanging down his face. Prather repeatedly asked why can't I see?
Glidewell was also interviewed, saying one of the white teens said they were going to kill a bunch of blacks, but used a racial slur.
The Justice Department shared all that in a letter to King, which also said there's only one person who could be tried, but it didn't have the jurisdiction to do that.
Only the state could.
Now the case is back in the state's hands where the D.A. John Weddle.
The only suspect who could be charged, was 18 at the time of William's killing.
That suspect is Albert Paul McCann.
"He was a quiet person and he did not have a chance to see which way he wanted to go," King shared.
She says her mother was strong despite her anguish for the family.
It's a like a sore a scab keeps falling off of it. You think it heals and the scab falls off of it again."
A wound King hopes will close was once justice is served.
WTVA reached out to D.A. John Weddle and they could not immediatley provide comment. We also plan to reach out to Albert Paul McCann, who has been named by the federal government as the only person who can be charged in this case.
