OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) - Shots were fired near the Ole Miss Campus Saturday night.
Students were sent a Reb Alert at 7:50 p.m. advising them to avoid the Hathorn Road area.
The university sent another alert at 8:38 p.m. saying authorities cleared the area.
It also stated the University of Mississippi and surrounding areas had been cleared of any dangers by local authorities.
Only one gun was shot. Multiple shots were fired, but no one was injured, Oxford Police Hildon Sessums confirms.
Former Ole Miss student and Oxford resident Jess Waltman is concerned with the safety of Oxford and the university campus.
"You know Oxford is such a safe place and Ole Miss is such a safe place," Waltman said. "I think we consistently have some of the lowest crimes rates in the country; I know for certain in the SEC. And I know that is the reason a lot of people come here is that they do feel so safe, which is especially shocking for something like this too of happened, especially during a football game."
The Oxford Police Department is still investigating. They say they have promising leads that may lead to an arrest soon.
