TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton revealed on Sunday he will not run for a third term.
Shelton wrote in an opinion piece in the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal he did not want to put the city through an ugly re-election campaign because of his support of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.
The Democrat added he will continue to work hard as mayor through the end of his term in July 2021.
Shelton's political affiliation stands out in a state that is predominantly Republican, especially with his wins for the city's top political job.
In recent months, Shelton criticized Governor Tate Reeves and President Donald Trump, both Republicans, for their performance during the coronavirus pandemic.
