SALTILLO, Miss. (WTVA) - For the third consecutive year, the Saltillo Police Department gave out turkeys instead of tickets ahead of Thanksgiving.

"Would you rather have a turkey or a ticket?"

That is the question police officers asked drivers on Wednesday.

"Basically, it's just a blessing for our police department to have the opportunity to go out and bless families in need," Police Chief Grant Bailey said.

With the help of residents and businesses, Saltillo Police collected 25 turkeys and 25 bags worth of food for a Thanksgiving dinner.

"Oh, I'd rather have a turkey for Thanksgiving," one driver said. "Oh, bless your heart."

The police chief said the Police Department plans to also continue its Christmas tradition - handing out hams instead of tickets.
