SALTILLO, Miss (WTVA) - First United Methodist Church and the Saltillo police department teamed together to hand out free hams to the community.
For the very first time, Saltillo police and the John Wesley Sunday school class at First United Methodist Church hosted a drive-thru ham giveaway.
"This year because of the 2020 and all the tumultuous times, the difficulties a lot of families are having, we decided to partner with the Saltillo police department," said Jason Herring
Local vendors helped First United acquire several hams. Together, the Saltillo Police Department and the church gave away 225 hams.
Every year the church and the police department host their own event, but because of the pandemic, they felt it was necessary to join together to help the community.
"With so much going on in our community and nation, with the different pandemic that's going on, it's good for people to know that there's a police department and local church," said Saltillo's public relations director Deundre Pool. "We are banning together to try to do what we need to do to make sure people eat."
