Update 8/2 9 a.m. - Columbus Police Chief Fred Shelton says police are now searching for three suspects in an armed robbery outside the Princess Theatre Wednesday morning. Police were able to retrieve multiple videos of the crime committed before an off-duty officer-involved shooting took place. They hope to release more information on the suspects early next week.

"We now know that we are looking for three suspects from the incident. We will also have a better description of their clothing after our analysis. We can tell you that the suspects arrived on foot from one block South of the Princess and they walked North. They then left into the same direction; going South," Shelton said.

Update at 3:01 p.m. - Columbus Police Chief Fred Shelton says police are now searching for two suspects following an off-duty officer-involved shooting Wednesday morning.

Police say the two suspects were seen robbing customers for money at the Princess Theatre in downtown Columbus.

"There is a patio there at the front of the Princess Theatre. The customers were sitting there when one of the robbers came up and asked them for money. They said, 'Freeze, give me your money,'" Shelton said.

An off-duty police officer was able to intervene. The officer was able to retrieve his personal gun out of his vehicle and confronted the suspects.

Police say this resulted in an exchange of gunfire with at least one suspect. Both suspects fled and the off-duty officer tried to chase after them. Police say the officer lost sight of them after about a block.

Police say the two suspects escaped together in a gold Honda Accord. One suspect is described as a black male, wearing jeans and an orange bandana.

Police do not have a description of the other suspect.

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) - According to Columbus police, an off-duty officer exchanged gunfire with an armed robbery suspect Wednesday morning. Reports indicate it happened outside the Princess Theatre on Fifth Street.

Police believe no one was hit. Early reports indicate the suspect fired at the officer and the officer shot back outside the theater.

Police say the off-duty officer was at the business as a customer, legally carrying an off-duty weapon when the officer got into a foot chase with the suspect after the robbery.

Police Chief Fred Shelton says the officer will return to work on his standard schedule since the officer was off-duty at the time of the incident. Police are not naming the officer since the incident is still under investigation. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.

According to police, the suspect is still on the run. He is described as a black male, wearing an orange bandana over his face.

If you have any information on the suspect's whereabouts, call Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151.
