OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) - The Ole Miss Associated Student Body Senate voted to recommend the relocation of a Confederate statue during a meeting Tuesday night.
The statue is located in the center of campus on The Circle and has been the center of debate in the last few weeks among those for and against Confederate symbols.
In a resolution passed unanimously (47-0), it was recommended that the Confederate statue be moved from its current location to the Confederate cemetery on campus. This location is near the Tad Smith Coliseum, also known as the former basketball stadium.
Last Thursday, the ASB Senate resolution passed the ASB Rules Committee. The resolution states the Confederate ideology "violates the tenets of the University Creed" and the monument's current placement on The Circle undermines the school's mission "to maintain an inclusive and safe environment", according to The Daily Mississippian.
Now that the resolution has passed the ASB Senate, the resolution is one step closer to moving towards Interim Chancellor Larry Sparks.
