OKOLONA, Miss. (WTVA) - Okolona extended its mask mandate during Tuesday night's city board meeting.
“The numbers for the state of Mississippi are on an increase and we want to continue to keep Chickasaw County on the low end of the spectrum as far as increase of coronavirus cases,” Mayor Sherman Carouthers said.
However, the fines for breaking the mandate have changed. Before, police officers could fine a person up to $500 for not wearing a mask inside a business in the city.
Now, a penalty will range from $50 to $100.
“The Board came back after an outpour of citizens’ concerns thinking they [the Board] could’ve been a little harsh,” the mayor said. “They [the Board] decided to reduce those fines.”
The mask mandate will continue until further notice.
