COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) - Sunshine Stables is a non-profit founded by Anna Brown, giving those with mental and physical disabilities a chance to find relief through riding horses.
“Horses and nature just have a certain peace about them that are truly wonderful," she said. "I think everybody should experience them.”
The organization was started as a way to give those a chance to be active and find comfort in horses.
However, only being open since 2018, Brown said it was unnerving when the pandemic first began.
She explained that Sunshine Stables was shut down completely, as she worried about client vulnerability to the virus.
Brown said she was not sure how the organization would stay connected with its clients.
However, after reopening, the non-profit saw all its previous clients return, as well as a few new faces around the barn.
“We didn’t really know if there was going to be a decrease in clients or if there was going to be even a Sunshine Stables after the pandemic," said the founder. "So, we were super excited to reopen and see an increase of interest.”
Sunshine Stables offers adaptive and non-adaptive lessons, giving everyone a chance to find peace among their disabilities.
Brown said after the pandemic, she hopes to open up for another crowd by helping those struggling with depression or anxiety.
She explained the two disorders are constant internal battles within the individual who has it. “Getting to work with horses, you have to focus on something external," she said. "It’s an opportunity for you to come and work with a horse and experience something outside of yourself to kind of get out of your mind a little bit.”
Brown said she sees anywhere from six to eight clients daily.
She explained that she loves to bring joy to children, but also has a special place in her heart to help their parents too.
“It is truly amazing to see a mom sign up for lessons who I can see a lot of myself in, come here and build confidence in an area of her life.”
Brown mentioned that she does have openings on Tuesday mornings and afternoons and Thursday mornings for anyone who may be interested in taking a few lessons.
