ABERDEEN, Miss. (WTVA) - The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department provided more details about a fatal crash that happened in Aberdeen on Oct. 25.
Sheriff Kevin Crook said deputies were assisting Aberdeen police officers with a safety checkpoint on Highway 45 in the northbound lane near the waterway bridge.
A vehicle came over the bridge at approximately 12:45 p.m. and swerved off the road to avoid the checkpoint, the sheriff said.
The vehicle entered into the southbound lane and traveled through Aberdeen, approximately three miles, into oncoming traffic.
Crook said deputies tried to catch up with the vehicle, but the vehicle eventually crashed into a southbound vehicle near the Wendy’s restaurant.
The passenger in the second vehicle, Marqueze Lawston, died and medics transported the driver of the same vehicle to a local hospital.
Medics also transported the driver of the fleeing vehicle to the hospital for treatment.
The sheriff said deputies recovered what appeared to be a felony amount of marijuana from the fleeing vehicle.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the incident and will be the agency that files any criminal charges.
