JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) - Members of the state’s flag commission met Friday morning to vote upon their favorite designs to become Mississippi’s next state flag.
The commission whittled down the selections to nine designs.
Members voted to adjourn until 8 a.m. Tuesday on which they’ll announce the final five selections.
The Mississippi Department of Archives and History plans to display the finalists on its website. The website allows the public to vote on their favorite designs.
During Friday’s meeting, members of the nine-member commission showed their support for various design elements.
Many members liked the idea of the flag displaying a magnolia tree or flower, of which several remaining designs do have.
Some members liked the idea of the flag displaying an element symbolic of the state’s namesake, the Mississippi River.
Options were discussed about the flags' colors, such as using the traditional red, white and blue palette or using non-traditional colors such as green.
