LEE COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) - Troopers have identified the victim of a fatal vehicle crash Thursday night in Lee County.
According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Sherry D. Buford, 46, of Oxford, died on the scene of the crash on Interstate 22 near Highway 371.
Troopers say it appears 35-year-old Joseph Britt of Plantersville was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane of I-22. They say Britt's truck hit Buford's Nissan SUV head-on.
Buford died on the crash scene.
Buford had four passengers in her vehicle. Two of the four passengers received moderate injuries. The remaining two received life-threatning injuries.
All were taken to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
Troopers says Britt received minor injuries. He was also taken to NMMC.
"Due to the physical evidence collected at the crash scene, troopers believe Britt may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash," MHP stated.
After the investigation is complete, the case will be presented to a Lee County grand jury.
The Oxford School District confirms Buford was a teacher at Oxford Intermediate School.
