JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) - Mississippi troopers investigated three traffic deaths during the 2017 4th of July holiday period, and they are looking to lower the number this year.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol will begin its 2018 4th of July enforcement period on Tuesday, July 3 at 12:01 a.m.

The period will end on Wednesday, July 4 at midnight.

MHP says all available troopers will be assigned to saturation patrols to combat speeding and distracted driving issues.

Safety checkpoints will also be set up.

In 2017's same period, troopers investigated 183 crashes and made 100 DUI arrests on state and federal highway systems.

"We are asking motorists to have designated drivers in place regarding festivities and to join us in making the roadways safer in Mississippi," stated Captain Johnny Poulos with MHP.
