JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) - The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) started its Fourth of July holiday enforcement period early Friday morning.
The period ends Sunday night.
Each year, MHP conducts special enforcement periods for major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Memorial Day.
During these holiday enforcement periods, MHP uses all available troopers to combat speeding and distracted driving, and promote traffic safety.
During 2019’s Fourth of July enforcement period, MHP investigated 63 crashes with one fatality. Troopers made 43 DUI arrests.
In addition to the holiday enforcement period, MHP will conduct “Drive Right Mississippi,” a safety initiative that will continue through the month of July.
“Drive Right Mississippi” focuses on the left-hand lane law, distracted and impaired driving, speeding and seatbelt usage.
