EUPORA, Miss. (WTVA) - The Mississippi Hospital Association awarded the North Mississippi Medical Center in Eupora with the 2019 Outstanding Small Rural Hospital Award on Thursday.
President and CEO of North Mississippi Health Services, Shane Spees, said the hospital is one of 60 small, rural hospitals in the state.
This is the third time the hospital received this award.
MHA nominates hospitals for this award based on patient satisfaction, quality and safety, financial performance and innovation.
At a time when small, rural hospitals are disappearing, Dr. Sue Simmons said this award recognizes and validates the staff’s performance.
“It’s always nice to have people from the outside tell you, 'Yes, you’re doing a great job. Keep it up.'"
Spees said there are three reasons why many small, rural hospitals shut down.
Particularly in Mississippi, people who do not have health insurance coverage do not have access to the healthcare system.
Spees also said there has been a decrease in payment sources, like Medicare and Medicaid, reimbursing hospitals. This places a financial burden on the hospital, as well as regulations that add an administrative burden.
