COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) - The person who law enforcement officers shot Wednesday morning is dead, Columbus Police Chief Fred Shelton later confirmed.
The officer-involved shooting happened at approximately 8:00.
The chase stopped at Strawberry Street and 22nd Street North.
The truck has flashing lights and appears to be law enforcement.
According to a joint news release from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and the Columbus Police Department, sheriff’s officers were involved in a pursuit of a stolen pick-up truck in the city. Columbus Police officers joined the chase.
The truck they chased struck several other vehicles during the chase, according to the news release.
The chase stopped at Strawberry Street and 22nd Street North. The truck wrecked and the person inside got out.
Officers shot the suspect. Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant later identified the man who died as Austin Hines, 19, of Columbus. His body will be taken to the state medical examiner for an autopsy.
No law enforcement officers were injured in the shooting, according to the joint news release.
Shelton later clarified a man and two women were in the stolen truck. Officers shot the man. He said the two women were questioned.
