COLUMBUS, Miss (WTVA) -- The Confederate monunment in front of the Lowndes County courthouse may soon have a new home.
The Lowndes County Board of Supervisors voted to move the statue to Friendship Cemetery.
The board will have to purchase land at the cemetery and get bids on the cost to relocate the monument.
The Mississippi Department of Archives and History must also approve the move.
District 4 Supervisor Jeff Smith says the vote is the move in the right direction.
Smith said, "We have a courthouse that's not a location where there's not a Confederacy statue that's divisive in support. Our community needs to be unified this move helps create that unification."
BOARD MEMEBERS ARE NOT SURE HOW LONG THE PROCESS WILL TAKE TO MOVE THE STATUE TO ITS NEW HOME.
