LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) — One pastor says his church is halfway to the finish line after a fire destroyed it last year.
Pastor Jimmy Cockrell said the Prairie Hill Missionary Baptist Church was destroyed back in October after an overnight blaze.
Workers are rebuilding the church. It will be bigger and stronger than the last structure of the destroyed church, he said.
“I can say now the church it’s not God-proof, but we do have a better structure than we had last time,” he said.
Cockrell said when the church is finished, he hopes to work with school districts to implement more learning programs and scholarships for high school students.
Workers should be finished construction on the church later this year or by early 2021, he said.
When the church reopens, Cockrell said he will make a more detailed coronavirus plan for services.
“Everyone can come in and be safe and feel comfortable about being in the facility,” he said.
