COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) - The Lowndes County School District is looking to renovate New Hope Elementary School.
Lowndes County School District Superintendent Lynn Wright said he wants to build a storm shelter at the school.
He applied for a grant through the Mississippi Emergency Management and Federal Emergency Management agencies to help fund the project.
The project is estimated to cost between $3 million to $5 million, but with the grant, the district will only be responsible for 25 percent of the costs.
In August 2018, the district completed storm shelters in New Hope High School and the Career Tech Center in Lowndes County.
The shelter at the high school is a multi-purpose gym with rubber floors, two-feet thick walls and strong support beams.
Wright said the walls can withstand winds up to 200 miles per hour and the rubber floors are durable.
