CHICKASAW COUNTY, Miss. -- Community members are mourning a long-time basketball coach in the Chickasaw County area who died this week after a battle with leukemia.
Bruce Franks taught and coached for 37 years at area schools, including Hebron, Calhoun Academy, Houston High School, and Wilkinson Christian Academy.
Franks, who had been diagnosed with leukemia, died at about 7 p.m. Tuesday.
A long-time friend said Franks left behind a big legacy for the community, adding that he was a mentor and strong family men.
Throughout his coaching career, he had many accomplishments, including a record of more than 1,400 wins in both girls and boys basketball. One of his former players said he was more than just a coach – he was a man of many titles.
“Coach kept up with me after I graduated high school. I moved off, went to the Jackson metro area, but he always stayed in touch from time to time. We would talk on the phone. I knew I could call him if I never needed anything,” a former player said.
Friends and family members of Franks said he believed that coaching and teaching young men and women was his calling. He would instill lifelong values and strived for his players and students to be better Christians, and succeed in life.
Funeral services for Franks will be held Friday, March 30 at 2 p.m. at Parkway Baptist Church.
