TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - When Tupelo Native, James Hawkins posted his Mississippi flag design on Facebook and Twitter, he didn't know it would get a lot of traction.
His design has caught attention from local artists, other Mississippians, and even popular comedians.
The local designer showed visuals of what his design would look like in a frame, on a coin, and flying high on a pole.
Hawkins' flag idea features the Mississippi state bird, the mocking bird. It also has one star to represent togetherness and a golden sun that stands for the state's agriculture.
As for the reason why he created a design, James said it was important that an artist who designs the flag be familiar with Mississippi history.
“One of my concerns was the committee portion of the flag design. That they would come up with a flag design for Mississippians, but I thought it should come from the people of Mississippi instead," he said.
James hopes his flag design will push lawmakers to seek ideas from Mississippi artists.
