Rep. Trent Kelly honors artwork from local students

FULTON, Miss. (WTVA) - Congressman Trent Kelly announced the winners of the 2019 Congressional Artistic Discovery Contest.

The annual contest recognizes and encourages artistic talent in each congressional district.

It is sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives. 

The following winners were chosen from Kelly's First Congressional District, which features most of the WTVA 9 News viewing area.

The winners are:

1st place - Skylar Sloan, Saltillo High School senior

2nd place - Sidnie Hunt, Winston Academy senior

3rd place - Annie Simpson, Ripley High School sophomore

4th place - Reagan Hall, Ripley High School sophomore

5th place - Ellis McBride, Ripley High School sophomore

6th place - Katie Beth Wadkins, Corinth home-schooled senior

These winners were selected from more than 100 entries that were submitted by students who live in the congressional district's 22 counties. 

A panel of artists select the winning entries.

Winners from across the nation will be honored during a June reception in Washington, D.C.

The first place winner's artwork will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol building. 

"I've entered other competitions on a regional level," Sloan said. "I think it's really cool that my art is going to be highlighted on a national level. I never really thought that I would be able to do that." 

The other winners' artwork will be displayed in Kelly's field offices in Farmington, Tupelo, Columbus, Hernando and Eupora.
