LEE COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) - There's another scam alert, this one out of Lee County, where authorities say callers are actually posing as officers.
Sheriff Jim Johnson says his office got seven or eight calls Wednesday morning, of people concerned about so-called deputies or officers asking for their money or else.
"They’re trying to make a restitution for an unpaid fine that you’ve got and telling you that if you don’t pay it there’s going to be some type of incarceration,” commented the sheriff.
Residents said they were shocked to hear about the fake calls. The sheriff's office says they do not make calls for collecting money.
“They just need to get their money with an honest job,” said Collin Ferguson, who lives in Tupelo.
If you receive such a call, you are asked to contact authorities.
"If we are looking for you, we are not going to contact you over the phone for some type of payment," said Johnson "We can’t even accept payments here.”
