TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - The Senate Economic Development Committee held a hearing on unemployment Thursday.
The Mississippi Department of Unemployment Security administrators gave an update to changes they’ve made during the pandemic.
MDES Executive Director Jackie Turner said the department has increased the number of employees in the call center, and the number may continue to increase.
The department said they received more than 1,000 claims a week at the beginning of this pandemic.
Currently, more than 43,000 investigations are waiting to be complete, but Benefits Payment Chief Jeff Rhodes said they are deciding on claims within 20 days.
Administrators said it is important to remember that once you have filed your unemployment claim, you must complete a weekly certification.
MDES said they will continue to work to solve issues Mississippians are facing with the unemployment process.
“Our work isn’t done until everyone is served,” Turner said.
