COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) - Keith Gaskin will become the next mayor of Columbus.
He defeated incumbent Robert Smith in the June general election.
"Going forward, I want all citizens of Columbus and Lowndes County to know that I am here to help," Gaskin stated Wednesday. "Improving quality of life, ensuring public safety, maintaining our public infrastructure, strengthening our public schools, and steering Columbus toward economic growth will be my administration’s top priorities. I will pursue them tirelessly."
He addressed Smith in his statement.
"I’d also like to thank Mayor Smith for his many years of service to this city. His historic tenure is an achievement unto itself and I’m honored to follow him in leadership of Columbus."
Smith issued a statement on Wednesday.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the citizens of Columbus for allowing me the opportunity to serve as Mayor for the last 15 years and five years as Ward One Councilman and Vice-Mayor. It has been an honor and privilege to serve Columbus for the past 20 years."
Smith addressed Gaskin in his statement.
"I wish the new administration great success in charting the path for the City of Columbus. Congratulations to Keith Gaskin, and I personally wish you great success as Mayor of the City of Columbus."
