ATHENS, Ala. (AP) — A judge has denied former Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely's request for a new trial as he seeks to overturn his conviction on theft and ethics charges.
Judge Pam Baschab denied the request Saturday.
Blakely was convicted of taking no-interest loans from a jail fund that held prisoners’ money and of stealing $4,000 from his campaign account.
His lawyer argued in court filings that there were multiple legal errors at the trial, including closing the courtroom for a day during jury selection.
Such new trial requests are rarely granted by the trial judge, but mark the start of an appeal.
