IUKA, Miss. (WTVA) - An Iuka man is in pain tonight but fortunate to be alive after almost being crushed inside a garbage truck.
Arthur Green, 41, had to be rescued by paramedics and police after he says he went to sleep inside a dumpster near the Subway in Iuka.
Iuka Police Chief Randy Stringer says this is the first time he knows of anything like this happening in Iuka.
Green says he was simply trying to get out of the rain when he got into the dumpster. But he was awakened suddenly when he realized the dumpster was being emptied by a garbage truck.
Police say the truck had already started the process of compacting the garbage. Fortunately, Green began to yell and the truck's driver heard him inside of the truck's compactor.
"It felt bad, so much pain I felt," he said. "I thought I was going to lose my leg, get it pinched off."
Chief Stringer says the garbage truck driver indicated it's pretty common occurrence in other towns.
"It's just never happened here before," he said.
Green says in his case, it'll never happen again. He was being treated at a local hospital.
