HOUSTON, Miss. (WTVA) - Members at Parkway Baptist Church held a luncheon for first responders in Chickasaw County early Saturday.
Pastor, Dr. Randy Rinehart, said their late member, Jeremy Voyles, created the luncheon a few years ago.
Voyles was a deputy and passed away last year in the line of duty.
Since then, church members decided to continue what Voyles started.
"We decided to make this every year to honor our first responders and a little bit of a memorial for Jeremy, our friend who we miss so much," Pastor Rinehart said.
Pastor Rinehart believes it is important to show first responders appreciation, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.
"This has been a strange year all the way around," he said. "These guys, these first responders are at the frontline with COVID, with everything, and literally put their lives on the line every day."
Essential workers helped themselves to food and dessert at the event.
Emergency Management Director for Chickasaw County, Linda Griffin, was one of the many responders at the luncheon.
She said she was grateful to have a day to relax and socialize.
"As a first responder, we give to our community, and it's even more special when our community gives back to us," she said.
