HOUSTON, Miss. (WTVA) - The former Houston city clerk faces embezzlement charges.
A spokesperson for the State Auditor’s Office confirmed on Friday the arrest of Kathy Smith.
Agents with the auditor’s office booked her into the Chickasaw County jail.
She is free on bond.
The auditor demands she repay $131,697, which includes interest and investigative expenses.
She allegedly embezzled cash and money orders meant to pay fines levied in Houston Municipal Court. She’s accused of manipulating records.
The auditor’s office claims the alleged crime occurred from January 2013 to April 2018.
She faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted and $5,000 in fines.
