COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) - One man was found dead in Columbus after police officers responded to a reported shooting Monday.
Columbus Police Chief Fred Shelton said the officers responded to a home at 22nd Street and 7th Avenue North.
There they found the man dead.
“Once we arrived, we found a victim on the porch of a nearby home,” Shelton later stated. “The victim had a fatal gunshot injury. The victim approached a Jeep at the intersection of 22nd and 7th. An argument then took place, and we believe the Jeep driver shot the victim while they were in the street. We believe the victim and the suspect knew each other since the victim freely walked up to the Jeep."
Investigators are trying to gather more facts about the incident.
“The only details we can release at this time is the victim lived in Columbus and is a black male in his 20s,” Shelton added. “All other details will come from the coroner’s office.”
Police are currently searching for a maroon-colored Jeep, driven by a Black man, seen in the area around the time of the shooting, Shelton said.
Anyone with information should call the Columbus Police Department at 662-244-3500.
