TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton proposed the idea of hiring homeless men and women to help pick up litter around the city.
Shelton wants to use Tupelo's homeless population to help combat the litter problems.
The city wants to work with employment agencies, the Salvation Army, and other homeless organizations to hire men and women to pick up trash along the streets.
This is not just for the city though, Shelton said he is also working with the county to hire the homeless to clean up trash for Lee County.
"One of the biggest challenges for the homeless population is finding gainful employment. It's difficult when you don't have transportation," Shelton added.
Shelton is proposing that Tupelo public transit would provide rides to and from work for the workers.
The City Council held a work session Tuesday to openly discuss this matter. They did not make a decision.
