MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WTVA) -- "I wanted to be a part of something bigger than me, bigger than this field. St Jude is a place that I can do all those things."
Katie Greer has a lot in common with her patients.
Just six months ago, Katie left her life in California and moved to Memphis to work at St. Jude.
"We have a lot of families from all over the world, all over the country. How are they coping with coming, uprooting their whole life, to come here to seek treatment," Greer said.
And she has a unique job. She's a child life specialist.
"Helping patients cope with what they are going through here. Creating a sense of normalization here through play," Greer said.
Walking through the doors at St Jude can be scary especially if you are a child. But it's child life specialist like Greer that help ease the process.
"It is a unique area to be in because a lot time people come here i'm the first stops they see. That coping piece of how are they doing," Greer said.
And helping the kids cope too with tools like Buzzy who flies in when patients get poked.
"So Buzzy is used for pain relief. He has a button and he vibrates. The idea is that we are going to put Buzzy between the pain and the brain, Greer said.
And Katie says that is the most rewarding part of her job, helping patients and families understand what they are going through and giving them the tools they need along the way.
"I love my job. I can't say more positive things about my job," Greer said.
