JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) - With people out and about enjoying the summer time sun, too much sun can cause harmful effects.

"Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun is the most serious environmental risk factor for skin and lip cancer. Even a few serious sunburns can double your lifetime risk of cancer," stated the Mississippi State Department of Health.

Several tips can help prevent this:

  1. Use sunscreen - rated SPF-30 or higher with both UVA and UVB protection. Check for expiration dates.
  2. Seek shade
  3. Cover up
  4. Get a hat
  5. Wear sunglasses
