GUNTOWN, Miss. (WTVA) - A man survived being tossed around by the EF-2 tornado that hit the Guntown Hill subdivision on Monday.
David Payne was home with his wife and father when he heard tornado sirens. He opened the door to see if they needed to go to their storm shelter.
As soon as he grabbed the door handle, he and the door went flying, he said.
The tornado sucked Payne approximately 4 feet off the ground. It felt like an eternity, he recalled. He said a fence saved his life.
He was able to take shelter behind his neighbor’s home.
“The good Lord was looking after me,” he said. “My mom is in heaven and I think she had something to do with it.”
Payne walked away with minor injuries: a bruised back, a sprained wrist, and he needed a few stitches.
