TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - Agriculture experts say gardening is becoming more popular in north Mississippi because of the coronavirus.

Extension agent John Nanney says people in cities and towns are now looking to get the most out of the space they have available. He has received a lot of phone calls from people asking about home gardening, particularly raised-bed gardens.

People who may not have a lot of room want to know how to grow vegetables in their backyards and beat the lines at the grocery stores.

Which vegetables should you plant now?

"Right now, some great things to be planting are things like tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, squash,” he said. “People are putting peas in the ground. I've even heard of some people planting small patches of corn. They need to be in the ground right now. If you haven't gotten them in there, they need to be in the ground pretty soon."

If you are thinking about planting a garden, Nanney says it is a good idea to get a soil sample. You can call the extension office in Lee County for advice and even get instructions on how to take soil samples and drop them inside a box outside the office.
