PHEBA, Miss. (WTVA) - Jockey Joe Jernigan died on Thursday after suffering injuries in a horse race at the Neshoba County Fair on Aug. 2.
"He was very much so family,” Brock Carter said. “And he was a part of our family. He called me his adopted son. I'm going to miss Joe 'till the day I pass away."
Jernigan was a member of the Pheba Racing Stables which participates in local races.
"Joe Jernigan was one of the best to ever sit on the back of a horse,” Carter said. “I mean he rode the wind."
Friends described him as always happy and the star of the team.
"He was hard to beat; you weren't going to find a better rider,” said Xavier Moye. “He was smarter than anybody he rides against and pretty much smaller."
