COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) - The Circuit Clerk and other election officials arrived at the Columbus City Hall at 9 am Thursday morning to check affidavits and curbside ballots for the mayoral race.
Officials checked 158 affidavits and counted curbside ballots for each of the 13 precincts in Columbus.
The group finished counting at around 4 pm.
Their final tally with affidavits and curbside ballots showed that Keith Gaskin held his lead over incumbent mayor Robert Smith.
Gaskin had 2,907 votes.
Smith had 2,867 votes.
The 40 vote difference could still be swayed by the 53 outstanding absentee ballots. Those all must be in by Tuesday at 5 pm in order to count towards the election.
However, the votes will not be certified and official until June 18th.
