LEE COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) - On Feb. 15, 2018, an alleged drunk driver was driving on the wrong side of the road and smashed into the Buford sisters: Sherry Buford and Sandra Phillips as they were traveling.
Three others were in the vehicle with them.
Sherry Buford died at the scene of the accident.
Sandra Phillips fought for a year after the accident in hospice care, due to her injuries. She passed away on Jan. 25, 2019.
Her family had to go through the loss of a loved one - not once, but twice.
"I can still hear my dad tell me this just happened and it feels like two weeks ago. It's still fresh, and it's raw. It hasn't been patched up," said Shara Buford, niece to both sisters.
Plantersville man Joseph Britt was charged with driving under the influence.
"If I could say something to him, I would tell him he has really hurt this Buford family. He has taken two lives that meant something to us," Sonya Buford expressed.
WTVA has reached out to see if Britt will be receiving any extra charges considering the loss of another woman in the accident.
