JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi lawmaker is criticizing the state attorney general for dropping prosecution of a white former police officer in the 2015 shooting death of an African American man.
The former officer, Canyon Boykin, was indicted on manslaughter in 2016 in the death of Ricky Ball.

Republican Attorney General Lynn Fitch announced last week that her office reviewed the case that was leftover from her Democratic predecessor Jim Hood.
Fitch says her staff determined that Boykin acted in self-defense.
Democratic state Rep. Kabir Karriem said Thursday that Fitch's decision to drop the manslaughter charge “puts a knife in the trust of the judicial system.”
