RIPLEY, Miss. (WTVA) - The district attorney is releasing more information about an officer-involved shooting last week in Tippah County.
Until now, law enforcement released little information about the Dec. 31 incident.
According to the Third Circuit District Attorney’s Office, Benton County deputies pursued a vehicle beginning that morning through Benton, Union and Tippah counties.
Other law enforcement and the Mississippi Highway Patrol joined the pursuit. It ended after the vehicle wrecked on Highway 15, just north of the Union/Tippah County line.
The suspect, Brian Lee Elkins, got out of the vehicle with a shotgun, according to the District Attorney’s Office. Law enforcement officers fired shots, and Elkins shot himself with the shotgun.
Tippah County Coroner Chris McCallister confirmed Elkins’ identity on Friday.
Law enforcement has yet to indicate why Benton County deputies starting pursuing Elkins.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case. The findings will be presented to a grand jury later this year for review.
