TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - A couple celebrating 70 years of marriage spent time doing what they love – walking.
Henry and Kathryn Cockrell celebrated their anniversary at The Mall at Barnes Crossing where they walk every morning.
The celebration was hosted by their fellow mall walkers.
"I've been a walker in the mall for about four years, and I've know them about six months," said Lil Nelson. "I found out when they were walking in the mall that he was 93 years young and she was 90, and when he told me they were celebrating their 70th anniversary, I said, 'Oh we have got to do something for them.'"
Both walk through the food court every morning at 10 a.m. and walk about 5 miles a week. They started walking as a precaution for their health but then it became fun.
"Well the doctor told him when he had his heart surgery that he could go home and sit on the couch and live a little while or walk and live a long time. It's been 18 years," Kathryn Cockrell said.
Henry Cockrell still walks, but his wife is recovering from a broken hip. However, she says when she fully recovers she'll begin walking again.
