COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) - The City of Columbus is taking steps to protect employees and customers of grocery stores and essential retailers from the coronavirus.
The City sent letters to all Columbus food stores and other retailers Monday evening. The letter outlines several protective measures.
All on-duty employees at these stores are to wear a facemask, face shield and food-grade gloves when they work within 6 feet of a customer, among other requirements.
“I want to be certain that all food stores and other essential businesses understand their obligations to their employees and the public,” Mayor Robert Smith said Monday evening. “Many of these employees come in contact with hundreds of different people every day. These businesses must follow these regulations until further notice. Some businesses are not following these guidelines, so we are making sure they understand every important procedure. Violators will be fined up to $1,000."
