COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA)— Three local firefighters are in Louisiana to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Laura.
Chip Kain, Battalion Fire Chief, said the firefighters deployed to Baton Rouge, Louisiana Wednesday night.
The firefighters will be rescuing hurricane victims and cleaning up storm damage.
Captain Melvin Junkins and Captain Wes Mims are swift water rescuers.
The crew took two water rescue boats with them.
“They’ve packed enough gear to get by for whatever is needed," he said. “If it comes to where they continue to need personnel we’ll rotate people through.”
Kain said they set up at the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and are waiting on their next assignment.
Thursday afternoon, Kain said the crew was looking at traveling to Lake Charles, La.
Engineer Chris Carter is a communication specialist and is already involved with an operation.
Kain said their deployment could be three days up to two weeks.
