STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - If you've lost a bicycle or someone has stolen one from you, you may want to look for it at the Starkville Police Department.

Sgt. Brooke Carpenter of the Starkville Community Oriented Policing Unit said the departments has about 45 bicycles sitting in its storage area.

She said she's allowing owners to come in and claim their bikes up until March 1.

Carpenter said the Department had accumulated the bikes since 2015, whether by someone turning in a lost bike or an officer recovering a bike at a scene.

Carpenter said owners can claim their bikes by showing proof of ownership.

A receipt, serial number or picture are allowed.

About 8 people have claimed bikes so far, but Carpenter said there are still quite a few left.

If the department doesn't clean out their storage area soon, she said they'll decide on either donating the bikes or hosting a bike giveaway.

"Most are in incredible shape," she said. "We have a few that probably need to just be thrown away, or if somebody needs parts they can stop by and see us, but most of them are in really good shape."
